Configuring RMAN Environment

SHOW ALL

   This command shows all the configured settings and default settings in the RMAN environment.
 # default denotes any default settings.

RMAN> show all;

RMAN configuration parameters for database with db_unique_name PROD are:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP OFF; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default

CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/snapcf_PROD.f'; # default

The show command queries the control file to retrieve RMAN setting.

You can view the configured settings in V$RMAN_CONFIGURATION

RMAN> configure retention policy to redundancy 2;

new RMAN configuration parameters:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
new RMAN configuration parameters are successfully stored

SQL> col name format a30
SQL> col value format a20

 SQL>   select * from v$rman_configuration;

     CONF# NAME                           VALUE
---------- ------------------------------ --------------------
         1 RETENTION POLICY               TO REDUNDANCY 2

How will you restore the parameters to default settings.

By using CLEAR command.

eg.

RMAN> configure retention policy clear;

old RMAN configuration parameters:
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 2;
RMAN configuration parameters are successfully reset to default value

What is the use of snapshot controlfile?

   When ever RMAN syncs the control file with recovery catalog a snapshot controlfile gets created. Also when a controlfile backup is taken a snapshot controlfile will get created.
